My name is Mickey1. It’s short for Michael Angelo2 Pangilinan2a. When I was younger I wanted to be either an astronaut, a hockey player, or a video game reviewer. Then I realized that I’m bad at math, quite small and not even good at video games, so instead I became a graphic designer. Despite having no idea what an It girl is, being an avid NPR listener and an overall dork, I was the art director of Nylon magazine from 2008–2010. I overhauled the magazine, designed features, oversaw photoshoots, helped with Nylon Guys, launched the Nylon iPad app and even did some modeling. Since leaving Nylon, I opened up a really great work space downtown with some friends, and I’ve been really busy starting my own studio. / Here are a few things that I’ve done this past year: I designed a restaurant identity for Bread & Tulips (get the beet salad and the rabbit). I did a Most Creative People in business iPad app for Fast Company. I lost my phone five times. I helped launch the GQ iPad app. I lost my wallet three times. I redesigned and art directed the Esquire Big Black Book. I cooked dinner zero times. I redesigned and art directed The Block, a cool Canadian fashion magazine. I worked out maybe once or twice. I’ve worked on identities3. I vacationed in Paris, Marrakesh, Kyoto and a couple days in St. Kitts4. I’ve designed a couple of books including a Cactus book and the Nylon Street book. I started reading 15 novels. I finished 4. Even though I’m a magazine designer at heart, I have been designing more and more websites. Every now and then I do small projects that are often then most fun things to do. / Anyway before I was the art director at Nylon, I used to work at Simon & Schuster designing book covers3 . I was also a designer at GQ from 2005-2007 doing features and front of the book pages. And before that I actually started my first real job as a designer at Nylon from 2003-2005 while I was in school at SVA in New York City. / If you want anything designed, e-mail me at mickey@actualidea.com. Here are a few things on my wishlist: art books, art galleries, bourbon labels, currency for small, tropical island nations, car dashboards5, but generally just good old, award winning, work that pushes the envelope, creates new paradigms, blurs the boundries between art and design, alters your mind and pays on time. I accept cash, credit cards, and/or whiskey. I have a ton of rollover minutes so give me a call at (917) 981-8252. / A few other things that I do: Whenever I see something cool or interesting I’ll post it on my corkboard. I have a nerdy side project where I place literature around the city called the If You Look project. Right now I am: a) working b) working. c) working. d) drinking e) all of the above. To find out which is true at this moment, follow me on twitter. / Now let’s get personal: I have a gigantic cat. My favorite sport is hockey. I’m a Mets fan. I can’t stand Whoopi Goldberg. Makers on the rocks please. Any other questions refer to my FAQ. If you haven’t met me, I have oversized eyebrows, big glasses, below-average height, above-average dandruff, oily skin, short arms, a dimple and am extremely good looking6 .
1. As in Mickey Mantle, not the mouse. Yes, I know it sounds like I'm in 2nd grade, but it's too late to change now. / 2. Yes, like the rennaissance artist. Or the ninja turtle. Bonus: My little brother’s middle name is Rafael. / 2a. My full name is Michael Angelo Pangilinan, not Michael Angelo, as a certain WWD article would have you believe... / 3. Ok, so some of these I did before this past year, but still. / 4. Thanks Google Earth. / 5. When was the last time you saw a great one? Really? / 6. A Gosling joke.
